Gardens at a glance
Gardens is a Cape Town inner-city neighbourhood situated south of the city centre. It is scenically located below Table Mountain and Lion's Head. With its stylish restaurants, hotels, boutique stores, and loft apartments, it is an upscale neighbourhood that attracts young professionals. Gardens is also a centre for the Cape Town creative sector, including modelling agencies, production and publishing firms, and other related businesses.
Hendrik Boom put up the first garden in 1652 on a spot near the Fresh River. Later that year, the garden was expanded to include a medicine garden and bridged the Fresh River (where Adderley Street now stands). It grew to 18 hectares in just a few years.
The garden was gradually changed into a botanical and decorative garden as more produce became available. The famed kilometre-long Government Avenue, which runs from the top of Adderley Street, also known as 'The Gardens', was first planted with lemon trees, then with orange trees in 1700, and oak trees, which remain today.
