Newlands at a glance
Newlands is a lush, affluent neighbourhood with beautiful houses that back onto the mountain and border the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens on three sides. Newlands Forest, located just off Rhodes Avenue, is a fantastic place for people to stroll their dogs and enjoy the scenery of Kirstenbosch.
The area is the epicentre of South African rugby and cricket and is home to the world-famous Newlands stadium. A sculpture park, a variety of local art studios, a craft store and café, as well as the first contemporary Bushman Gallery, are all located at Newlands' Montebello Design Centre.
In 1700, Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel received land for an estate that he named De Nieuwe Land or Nieuwland. The estate was leased to the British Colonial Government in the 1860s to serve as a country seat for Cape Governors, during which time Newlands Village was founded.
